In general they flower only a couple of times a year. Mine sometimes flower a third time, they are very happy where they are and I guess they like the care they get from us. I think the reason it is only a couple of times a year is because of genetics, but also how long they bloom for each time. I am sure they need down time between blooms to recover.

It all depends on the species of Orchid, the one I had was the variety that one would pin on a dress or wear on the wrist. I would make sure it had Miracle Grow Fertilizer for orchids, and it would bloom once a year. I kept it in a moist atmosphere, something like the tropics. However check with a local nursery, they can give you tips on the care and how ofter that particular varity will grow, as some are not hybrids.
Mine bloom about twice a year, sometimes three. I find they always have a bottom leaf drop off before a new "stem" appears.
