I would just break them up into little pieces and let the squirrels and other critters in my area eat them. Some birds eat the seeds, and others like woodpeckers will eat the flesh. A great treat for them.

I wouldn't put them in plastic bags, they will get very soggy and moldy if the water can't get out. Just break them up and pile them in an out of the way spot. By spring you can then shovel whats left into your bin.

To compost any kind of vegetables, the flesh must be mixed in to soil, containing an accelerator, such as manure. If you just put the pumpkins in black garbage bags, they will not compost properly. They will just rot, and you will have bags of heavy unmanageable pulpy putrid mush.

I'm confused. If you have a municipal recycle why would you take them? Wouldn't they be composted there too?

Recycling curbside programs are for non-compostable items, such as newspaper, plastic jugs, etc. Compostable curbside programs are for all matter that is organic, such as veggie and grass clippings, etc.

Different municipalities have different regulations as far as what is picked up at curb side, and what color of bin the stuff much be inside. Some municipality programs do not pick up any recycling, or compostables that are loose, in other words not in the color of bin for that week.

I think that some of these rules are contrary to encourging people to put out stuff for curbside pickup.
