Stripping furniture- any tips?

I have an antique dresser that has a lot of raised scroll work - it has been painted over many times! I'm having a little trouble getting into all the little crevices to remove the paint. I'd like to stain it not repaint it, so I'm trying to do a thorough job in removing all the old paint layers. Any tips would be appreciated!icon

Hi there, I found that my very best friend when stripping paint from furniture was steel wool and mineral spirits. Once you get the majority of the paint off that you can with stripper, go back immediately (when the stripper is still goopy) and scrub it with steel wool after you've dipped the steel wool in mineral spirits. Get it good and wet with mineral spirits and scrub scrub scrub. Add more stripper and let it sit as needed and then repeat the process. After that make sure and clean it off thoroughly with mineral spirits and then water and then letting it totally dry out before moving on to sanding.

This may sound strange but.....I purchased some dental tools at a flea market to get into those little spaces. Even the clamps are handy for using tiny balls of steel wool into the grooves. Don't worry if some hints of paint are still in cracks, that just shows it's age and adds character.

Love this idea - I think I have some old tools I picked up somewhere years ago that may just do the trick - I have no idea what they are for, but should be perfect for this. Never thought to use a tool to squeeze in the steel wool on those tiny places! Thank you!
