I don't think so, just don't take it too short. Leave at least 15" high.

I'm in Chicago suburbs and it is currently in the teens tonight. If your weather is this cold, I think you should wait til Spring. Pruning puts a plant in shock. And that coupled with very cold temps could kill it.
No you can do this, when ever you wish. Some folks NEVER trim them, at all, tho I like to. In fact, there are several bushes, that if you trim them back for winter, they will be fuller in the spring. Best wishes, J.
Some folks only trim until the ground freezes. This is up to you, but I trimmed just last week, in TN. So, we still have cool/warm weather. No white stuff, yet, only rain. Best wishes, J.
I would say that it is. You are supposed to prune lilacs right after they bloom and that's the only time. Your next years flowers grow on the new growth since last flowering. Just wait and do it all after it blooms next spring.
