You can refinish the outside edge and paint the middle. It gives the floor a folk art feel. Looks like a area rug to me. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/floors-ceilings/how-to-paint-rug-on-wood-floor-5829902

OK, pet stains are dark so you will want to go with a darker finish because you will never be able to sand deep enough to get those stains out. If you are young and able to work hard, go for it!

I would google and read all I could find about finishing floors. And then go talk to a floor finishing company...not the big box stores!!!

Sand lightly to break the surface of the floors but use a grit on the sandpaper that will not cut into the wood. Then using a dark stain, stain the floors darker. Dark floors are so popular these days. I would go darker but not to a really dark level.

I would then check out sealers/varnishes/etc. Years ago the best was the Gym finish using the kind of topping they use on gym floors. I am sure there are some newer great finishes out there.

You can even stain with a light paint and then seal like you would a darker stain. This is very pretty too. Again, google "whitewashing wood floors" and read up on it.

Whitewashing is when paint is watered down to let the grain show through. Back in the 80s it was called "Pickling!" Since the arrival of latex paint, any color can be used...from stark white to black!

"Pickling, bleaching, whitewash—they're all variations on the theme of treating light-colored woods, usually pine, oak, or ash, to make them appear even lighter, almost ethereal. This "limed" look stems from the 16th-century European practice of infusing wood with a paste of caustic lime to ward off insect infestation. Even then, it was appreciated for its decorative value."

Or, you could hold off on refinishing the floors until you have the money to do it properly, and just get a few area rugs to cover the bad places.

If the staining is not too bad, I'd try to save the floors. I live in a mid 50's house and the red oak floors were professionally sanded and finished (not stained) They look beautiful and any imperfections tell a story about the house.

You can try full strength hydrogen peroxide on the pet stains. It will lighten the stains. You can rent a sander and DIY! Good luck.
