First, cut off power to that outlet. To make sure power is off, plug in a lamp or something. Then check other outlets to determine what other outlets are affected. If power is off on both sides of that outlet, then this means that the outlet is daisy-chained to other outlets. You will have to cut in new outlets on each side of the door and carry the daisy-chain over (or under if wire is protected properly) the door. Turn the breaker back on and get the sawzall. Great idea for a project. We did this a few years ago. What a difference a door makes!

I would check with a contractor to see if there are going be any problems cutting into a load bearing wall.

Thank you both very much for these excellent tips. Just approximately, can you estimate about what should we expect reasonable labor and materials costs to be (we live in SW Virginia)?

Make sure that a licensed electrician does the work otherwise, your insurance may not cover it.

You've got a run of electricity going around the room. You can't just disconnect that plug. And if you are not familiar with how to frame in a heavy glass door and make sure it doesn't leak, you need to have this all professionally done.
