Unless you are a contractor, this is probably best left to a professional. Brickwork can be a little tricky, and you certainly don't want to take a chance that your chimney wouldn't be structurally sound. Check your local area and see if someone is willing to give you free estimates to see what you are looking at costwise.

When dealing with a masonry chimney you must determine first why the bricks are loose.

This project is best left to The Experts unless you know exactly what you are doing. The chimney may need to be taken down to the first solid layer of masonry and brick and then rebuilt with new product from there up. If it is just a few bricks here and there that are loose, the mortar between the bricks has probably deteriorated. In this case you must carefully grind out the mortar between all bricks, remove the brick, clean the surface and insert all new masonry cement and reinstall the brick and tuckpoint properly when you are completed.

it is a very tedious and time-consuming job and your best bet is to contact a chimney Mason or a qualified Chimney Sweep to do this reparation work

I had the same problem and used a chimney company who repaired and also installed caps on the chimney to keep out squirrels and birds.
