I'd not look at cleaning the whole house at once as that can be overwhelming. Take one room at a time. If that's too much, do just one table, or closet. What I'm saying, is break the job down into manageable parts. Make sure you complete the job. The reward and satisfaction comes from completing something. While you are cleaning, get into a habit of putting things away when done using something. That means a place for everything and everything in it's place. Then you will not have clutter.

I agree totally with Sal85902. I would add, that when you go into that space that you have already cleaned, and see something out of place that the 5 seconds to pick it up. That will keep that space just right, rather than having to do it all over again.

Sal and Cindy are right, but also call your local social services and make an appointment to talk to someone. Like so many there's a need to keep things. I mean look at all the storage facilities that are now in the USA. By finding out why you need all your things so close, you will feel better and not fall into that trap again. It can be overwhelming. You are not alone.

I hear ya. Sometimes it is not the physical ...it's the emotional that drags us down.

These past 3 years I have been very depressed...mom in nursing home and failing...got a divorce..lost my great job... and on and on. Sometimes it seems like I can't take one step forward without falling into a ditch and I give up and go to bed.

I've decided....I am truly a lucky person and am very grateful for all the GOOD in my life. And that includes my home. I am trying ..like the others said...to make a list of things that need to be done...only for THAT day so as to not get overwhemed...and check off my list as I go.

SOmething very catartic about crossing things off that list that gives me the feeling of.."I CAN DO IT!!"

And YOU can too !!! Turn on your favorite music...make yourself a super yummy cup of a specialty coffee(Or tea)...and get moving !!! WE CAN DO IT !!!

    Start slow :) God Bless

The biggest reason for a house in disarray is the fact that not everything has its place. When I have a big cleaning to do,I start in one room and begin with everything that not belongs in that room to take it to the next room to clean. In the beginning you have a big pile, yes, but then you can decide how much you can put away in a closet (things that belong in that particular room !). What's left behind : get rid of it.. a woman can only use that much of things. I keep the kitchen for last. and all the little things I don't even remember what is for, I put it in that one draw : tiny little screws, key rings and so on. In the kitchen only that one draw has a right to exist.

I read that we now have more “storage rental places” than we have homes 🏡...and MOST people don’t even remember what they have stored in them! IMO if you need to rent another place just to store stuff (that you will probably NEVER use & your adult kids won’t want when you’re gone) then you have TOO MUCH $H!T.

I would add to the other excellent suggestions that you make a detailed list of all your needed projects. By detailed, I mean, do not list 'clean master bedroom', but rather, 'Clear visible clutter in MB, clean out and rearrange drawers in MB, clean out closet in MB, wipe down baseboards MB' etc. Write them down as fast as you can (yes, the list WILL look overwhelming!) After you complete your list rewrite it in order of largest projects to the smallest in room order. Then tackle your list beginning at the bottom and work your way up! That way you you will see the immediate results as smaller projects are completed and it will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to do more. And remember it is like eating an elephant -- you can only do it one bite at a time!!!
