I always gave my pups toys, but took them away when the pup was three months old. The favorite thing they always chose was a man's cotton, white, athletic sock, tied in three or four knots.
This link has some fun ideas:

Use a sock and fill it with other socks..........
Tie a knot in a washcloth.
If you want home made doggie toys, here are a few we made. Use a plastic bottle (medicine or even mayonnaise size) and cut a small hole in one side. Make the hole barely large enough for treats to fall out. Roll the bottle and the dogs will catch on. I usually put their dry dog food in with only one or two expensive treats and they will roll it until everything is gone. This gives them a game to play. You can use the sleeves off old sweaters or old long socks and tie them in a large knot to play tug of war. Pieces of rope also make great fetch and tug of war games.
