What is the correct way to cut back plants for winter?

I live in the northern hemisphere, and there is a debate about how short to cut things back. (Hibiscus, jasmine, iris, wisteria etc.)

I Google everything - whether you use Google or any other search engine, you can learn almost anything. And talk to the Master Gardeners at my local nurseries as they know the climate and Zone you are in and can offer the best local advice. Also your local Ag Extension is a great resource too.
Any flowering vine such as wisteria and Jasmine should be pruned immediately after flowering has stopped,Perennial hibiscus dies back on it own,iris die back on there own.
