marble is a very porous surface and certain chemicals, like soap, can make it break down.... paint would leach down into the stone (like it does on wood) and once painted you would be stuck with the results... If you don't like the color or the pattern... try painting everything else in your kitchen to make the marble less of a feature.

If the marble is scratched or stained, you repolish it. You could put large wooden cutting boards over most of it. Don't think painting will work. You could glue Formica on top.
