My daughter does not ever use bleach. She soaks the fabric in lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide. If possible, dry them in the sun as that helps too.

I like this stuff - it does contain some bleach but is a powder it is cleans my whites very well.
First have your water checked. Sounds like you have iron. Aside from that hanging them on a clothes like in the sun will whiten and freshen them right up
