Add more lighting with lamps and wall scones, paint the walls a light color, remove heavy dark curtains, replace flooring with something lighter. Keep the furnishings light and add accessories such as accent rugs and pillows that lighten the space.
You can install lighting behind moulding. InvitingHome.com has moulding designed for indirect lighting and it ranges from formal to contemporary. It's a very nice look in a large room.
Recessed lighting is very nice.
In a large room, seating is usually arranged in groupings. Put lamps in the groupings. Large rooms do not need to have uniform lighting throughout.
