Depending on what you are doing with it - you can seal it with a polycrylic.

Keep the wood hydrated with one of the great products that are out there. I like lemon oil on some, Old English is good, so is Murphy's. Don't use Pledge or anything like that.
Reinforce with metal strips of stronger wood.
Brush on some wood preservative.
If you mean when you nail into it, pilot holes are a good option. Also you should blunt the tip of your nails by just tapping them once with a hammer on point. And avoid getting too close to the ends of the boards.
Linseed Oil works wonders on wood.
