  • Line the area with good quality landscape fabric and pin down. Then lay your rocks on top 2" - 3" thick. Having a border around them can help from having them spill out on to a lawn or walkway.

Using a landscape fabric works for a little while. Then the weed seeds blown in by the wind take root right thru the landscape fabric. When you pull the weeds the fabric comes up too. I use plastic. Get the thickest mil you can find and don't be afraid to double up. Or use the fabric and keep the weed spray handy.

And don’t dare go cheap and just dump the rocks on, even in a bare walkway. The rocks will be ground into the dirt before you know it. Best wishes 😇

For the pathways in our community garden, we used rocks mixed with sand, over the weed stop fabric. The sand settles to the bottom. We did this fairly recently, so I hope that weeds won't be a problem.

I don’t know what causes them to stain. If you have sand mixed with the rocks, the runoff should be fairly clean. I would think rain would wash them and leave them cleaner.
