We just used the wire shelving that is common for closets and it has worked well. Make sure to put the braces into studs so that the shelf can hold the weight of whatever you store there.
my currant place has re purposed kitchen cabinets over the washer. Very nice storage and safe from kids and cats. There are shelf brackets to be had at big box diy, find set you like, then get a pine board, tung oil if you want a natural look, or prime and paint. Screw the pine bord to the brackets. The brackets are in different sizes..make sure you get a set that matches. You may need 4 brackets for adequate support.
If you have kids, check with habitats for humanity restores for a cabinet you can put a child safety lock on.
I just used brackets and a coated wire shelf that was the right width. I am short, so I needed a lightweight, wide shelf I could reach. I also keep a $1 grabber from Dollar Tree in the laundry room for things that get pushed to the back. I may cover the shelf with wood some day, but I doubt it. I like the open shelf look in my very small utility room. Oh, btw, there is a 1’ Deep white wood shelf up higher, but it may as well be in the garage. It is totally out of reach! Best wishes on your own shelf. 😇
I just purchased inexpensive brackets and a pre-cut shelf from any home improvement store.
I loved this Hometalk post: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/laundry-room/shelving/modern-farmhouse-laundry-room-makeover-31382595
Followed the plan, and got great results.
