Cover the furniture with slick plastic with mother to catch onto. 😇
I used Elmer's glue and many layers of cardboard to make a 10" x 36" wedge shape that the cat can stand on and pick to her heart's content. I put mine in a central location but I could move it elsewhere if she got the notion to scratch furniture again. It worked wonders for us...guess she likes the cardboard best.
duct tape to the rescue! Cut a piece long enough to cover what kitty is scratching...attatch it glue side out. You ca also get her/ him a kitty manicure set called soft paws...think fake nails for cats...they come in many colors. Mimi black looked smashing in her pumpkin orange manicure....and.get here her own scratching post. Some cats like the st up scratching like the furniture, some will scratch horizontally. get them both types and a sprinkle of cat nip on them.
Do they have a cat tower or scratching post? They even sell cardboard "scratch boxes" even at some dollar stores. Here is an example.

Spray the cat(s) with water with spray bottle when you catch it doing it.
Spray citrus essential fragrances around the furniture
There are clear sheets you can apply to their favorite places, you remove the backing carefully and it sticks really well. I can't remember the name, but they work very well. Also, be sure there are enough scratch posts in the house. I also move them in front of the spot where they are mostly scratching, after spraying the posts with catnip oil. Good luck. I have two myself, and the are pretty good about it now. I do like the clear sheets though. You can easily remove them.
