Ideas for Excess Headboards?

Hello, lovely Hometalkers! The ReStore has a bit of a dilemma... We have all of these wall mounted headboards and we need to make space for new donations!
Can any of you DIY gurus give us poor ReStore-folk some good ideas so we can tell our customers? (and get these out faster?) Remember! The faster we can get these out the door, the faster we can continue: Building Homes. Building Community. Building Hope.

Atop a shelf, these could be charming chalkboards or family message boards. Could serve the same purpose atop a dresser or vanity with a damaged mirror.

I also thought the same as Lori great chalkboard or message boards! Can be upholstered as actual headboards and attach boards so the can attach to the bed rails. Paint them- etc! Also, great backing to a cute garden bench-all painted in white.

I think they would make great cabinet doors, or even corner shelving (a bit bulky)

I use a lot of these odd pieces for repurposing dressers, chests, ect . Save what you want out of the design , repaint and attack to top back of item.

I wish these were at my local ReStore - I'd be building benches for my front porch, back deck, and the patio!!
  • Jane H Jane H on Mar 21, 2014
I agree with Becky - these would make a fabulous back for a bench. If you have gym flooring in your location (our Ballard, WA store always has a good supply) it can make a great material for the seat of the bench. Add simple legs/posts to the front, scrap wood for the bench frame, and you have a cool bench!

cut off half the board length wise, and attach to back at right angle making a cool hanging shelf.

Cut off the legs and make coat racks by adding hooks, or use cork to make into bulletin boards. Get out the homemade chalkboard paint, and make chalkboards in a variety of colors. Put two together to make a table top (if you're really industrious, you can use the legs for table legs.
  • KathrynElizabeth Etier KathrynElizabeth Etier on Mar 21, 2014
Cut off legs, attach wire (or other) boxes or baskets and use as an organizing station. Create a welcome sign for the home with family name and house number.

I work at a re-store or volunteer, and the director comes up with the neatest idea's! It the Christian Foundation . I take her headboards and paint the. And chalk paint them and then we use chalkboard paint. These are big sellers for weddings and for people to use as signs. I also paint some and update them and just paint will update them where people want to buy them. Labs even recycles the springs out of the box springs by using them to hold candler sand hanging them. People can't get enough of this stuff. Find a someone to paint them. I use their left over paint and paint everything including luggage, old mirrors, I can make new windows look old and this sales it. If you need help I have pictures and can show you her Facebook page. She can sale everything! And I love being part of it.

Gosh I hope you can understand what I had written I am texting on a phone and it auto corrects. This little store sales everything. She has found ways to re-cycle and reuse just about anything. Even giving parties like Spring Fling, Christmas Parties. The displays are incredible and it is about presentation. I have never seen another one go this far to do this and it makes a big difference in the money they raise.

Sherrie, I understood what you wrote and would love to see the pictures or cruise the Facebook page. KathrynElizabeth, could you share your homemade chalkboard paint recipe? I know I could fine some on the web but would love a recommended one.

@Cathie W The recipe I use is simple: 1 cup latex paint + 1 TBS unsanded grout (the powedered type); mix well. This will give you an almost oatmeal-textured paint that goes on flat and adheres well with little dripping. I intend to experiment with using a little less unsanded grout and see what happens.

Make big signs or chalkboards from them... they would look great!
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Mar 22, 2014
I would put these in a stack called, "Today's great prices...FREE". I would run them for a few days of a limit 1 per customer after which I would let them all go. A lot of people who work in wood would be glad to have these.

you know I go to the restore in a neighboring city and am always looking for something to recycle. what these stores need is someone to make a few things to show people what they can do with stuff like these headboards. maybe make a chalk board, a new headboard, potting bench... same with old lights people give them. paint some old end tables. some people can't see the possibilities themselves but if they see something someone else has done they can at least use then idea.
  • Ang Ang on Mar 22, 2014
take two and make the sides to a bench with them .. or perhaps three and use one for the back of the bench too .. add legs and use on porch too .. you can also cut them in half to make smaller benches ..
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Mar 22, 2014
I donate my time to paint and recycle at our re-store. The director is a inspiration. I paint several pieces for display... Her idea! And for special parties I paint pieces for re sale. The whole idea is if someone sees it they can also make it. She has several people who can do amazing things. One can make neat stuff out of everything, one sews, I paint she has some amazing idea's. Since my store is non profit it goes directly back to the community to help. Win win!

I always think of a sign when I see these. If you painted the inside with chalkboard paint then people could write their own sign on them. OPEN. CLOSED. ANTIQUES. etc.

Paint one up shabby chic as an example.
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Mar 22, 2014
Couple of DIY chalk paint recipes. Actually you can age or distress any paint. But the easiest way to get a chalky look is 1 cup of paint (. I prefer flat but any will do 1 table spoon plaster Paris, 2 tablespoons hot water. Mix plaster and hot water, let cool. Ad paint. Mix well. I also use calcium carbonate. Food grade CC only.

Paint to match your decor, add a bottom shelf and coat hooks and hang by your front door.
  • Gloria Duy Gloria Duy on Mar 23, 2014
I think you should just have them be headboards, but paint one up in chalk paint with some sort of graphic design in the middle, or just print off pictures of different designs.
  • GranArt GranArt on Mar 23, 2014
I would create signs with them, chalk boards, short pew benches, use for the back of a porch swing, pot rack, coat rack, add shelves to the front and create a book case, OMG where are you, I need to get some of those. :)

Paint the upper half with chalkboard paint. Attached to the lower half cork panel to use it as a message/reminder centre. I also like the idea of painting, stencilling and adding hooks and use it as a coat rack.

I wish you were in Georgia, I would buy from you. These are all great ideas. If you search on HomeTalk for headboard, you will get tons of other ideas too. I don't know if you can take pictures of the projects that have been done with headboards, but if you could print these pictures, then possibly mounted them next to the stack to how what can be done with them. People would be inspired. Also advertise on Facebook and Craigslist, Freecycle.org and any other free publication.

  • David David on Mar 23, 2014
Use as the back or cut in half as sides of a bench. Your add on sales would be wood to complete the structure. Chalk/reminder boards: do you sell chalk paint or have the supplies to make chalk paint? A really nice pet bed with add on sales to finish the structure. Attach boards horizontally and create an all purpose shelf or a place for nic-nacs. Hang on the wall for the family's rogues gallery as is or turn it into a picture frame and make some add on sales of molding to frame the photos/art. Have fun and thanks for your great efforts in providing housing.

Make it a photo center. Either push pin onto a cork board or put 'picture corners' and slip photo's inside and change out for new seasons. Paint an outstanding color for eye appeal. Now, WHERE ARE YOU! I want some! LOL!

great small fencing, attach some stakes decorate as you wish, add plant hooks
  • Jossi Jossi on Mar 24, 2014
I love Maribeth's idea of wainscoting, and I'd also make a pile of benches to sell for the re-cover store ! Your volunteers should be able to whip out a bunch of them, paint them up and make some cash ! You can even have someone make a nice seat cushion and hold a raffle !
  • Carol Carol on Mar 24, 2014
