A door/headboard has been on our "to do" list for quite some time. We intend to: remove all hardware and fill any holes left from hardware. Place the door on its side and attach a mantle down its length. Paint comes next. We will attach headboard to wall by securing it into the studs in the wall. You can also attach headboard to bed if your frame can accept it.
For our KING size bed, I took a hollow core door, painted it, glued on matchstick bamboo panels for decoration and hung it on the wall with a homemade wooden French cleat. It stayed very secure on the wall as a headboard until we took it down (after 16 years!).
