How do you replace outside doors in a 1949 house?

The walls were built of thicker naterial, so the standard modern door and brickmolding won't fit.

A good carpenter can make a door jam and moldings to fit that particular door opening and replace with a new more efficient door. My home was built in 1915 and we had to have the back door replaced and had the same issue. They modified and installed a beautiful new door.

I replace my front door in my 1940s house last year, I got a solid mahogany door at Habitat for Humanity Restore.... they have an excellent selection of older doors with some character.

My door had to be fitted by my contractor, but I could have done this myself with a circular saw, a new blade, put painters tape on the edge to prevent chipping. You put the new door on saw horses, and lay the old door on top, and then mark what need to be removed with a soft pencil.

Oh tip, if you live in a wet climate, I epoxied all the cut edges before we hung the door so those wood fibers wouldn't absorb water especially on the bottom leading to water damage.
