It is not hard at all! Turn off the breaker for the plug you are changing and follow the instructions that come in the box with your GFI plug.
If the GFI doesn’t work once installed and you have power to the plug, it’s probably a bad plug. We buy more than we need so that we can put in working plug(s) right away and return the bad one(s) later.

GFI plugs do need to be individually grounded... check your local electrical codes.
