Clean and rinse well, let dry overnight. Water-based polyurethane in High-Gloss. Minimum of two coats, but recommend three. Let dry completely between coats.
Depending on the size of your planters, I use bricks or a partial cement block. Just tie the tree down to bricks and it should hold it.
I would check with the manufacturer before putting anything on it.
