How to prepare tulip bowls for next Spring's bloom

I received this vase with bulbs in water up to their shoulders, with rather short vegetation , perhaps 5 inches tall, roots were already growing. Within a week the plant shot up with no visible buds, then voila , almost overnight, these lovely tulips. To do this again, is there something you have to do to the bulbs which are only available for Fall planting?

That is a good question. I know the main thing when they are planted in the ground is to NOT cut them back. You could cut off the flower when it is done. You might try putting them in a box after the leaves and stems have dried and turned yellow and adding something like peat moss. Good luck

Its very dicey getting forced tulips to re-bloom. You should cut off the flower stalk after the blooms fade, then plant them outside with all the foliage intact. Its the foliage that feeds the bulb for next year.

Thanks Douglas, but I phrased that incorrectly. What I meant is to get new bulbs to bloom, not these. I would have to buy them in the fall, and "plant' them in water in late winter to produce the same effect.

@JBsez You would have to buy the bulbs in the fall, then put them in your refrigerator for 12 weeks before you put them in water.

I wondered the same thing jaym. I had refrigerated some bulbs for about 6 weeks and planted them. They are done blooming and wondered if I should keep them watered or let the foliage die. They are in a container.

@Elaine Simmons You need to keep them watered and the foliage healthy for as long as possible.

Thanks Doug.....I hope I didn't wait too long to water them.

AHA ! A solution. These are longer lasting than any potted tulips I've had. I'll get back to your next year . : ) THanks.
