How do we go about removing a brick and mortar fireplace, hearth?

This fireplace was built 31 years ago, we have only used it 3 single times. We want to remove it on the inside of the house and also the exterior all the way to the roof and remove the chimney. We would like to attempt to save some of the brick for repairing the huge hole in the exterior this will create.

Unless you have LOTS of DIY experience... this is a job for a contractor... Check on HomeAdvisor.com or AngiesList.com to find a reputable one. Get estimates and references.

I was worried this would be the answer, I spoke to someone recently who had it done to the tune of $10,000.00 and I don't or can't go there.

Thank you for taking your time to reply.

Perhaps you can find a way to make it more attractive. Sometimes paint looks great. Put a nice screen in front of it, or some candles.
