Hi Janice, I have seen people staple runners down the center of wood staircases, being careful to only put the staples all the way back where the tread and the rise meet.
A carpet stair runner would solve the problem. Most are bound on the sides already and all that needs to be done is install them... I would have this done professionally... a bad installation would be a serious safety hazard... to YOU and the dogs.
Tape off the 2 sides & the back. Paint the rest with marine epoxy paint. While it is still wet, sprinkle course sand over it. Let dry 24 hrs. sweep & enjoy slip free walking. If indoors use vacuum.
