you cannot touch the roots it will kill the tree,learn to work around them.build a small retaining wall .
Before doing anything that might compromise the tree, I would suggest having an arborist take a good look at it and provide suggestions to remedy. I take it the tree must be quite large after all this time.
dig down enough to expose the roots, if you have a reciprocating saw with pruning blades, cut out as much as you can. buy a container or 2 of copper sulfate granules at hardware or home improvement store. read and follow directions carefully. it is very toxic if not handled properly. then cover the roots back up.
Consult an arborist before you fool around with healthy tree roots.
Damaging my the roots will harm a tree. The easy way to remedy the problem is to cover the roots with soil and reseed the lawn. You get heathy trees and a beautiful lawn.
