Good luck!
Line your kitchen sink with Reynolds heavy duty aluminum foil. Add 1 gallon HOT water ( actually bring mine to boiling) and 2 cups ice cream or canning salt ( completely dissolve the salt in a little warm water before adding; don't have to stir in the sink that way) into the sink. Soak each piece for between 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse, finish cleaning with silver polish and rinse. Buff dry. The polish will leave a finish on the piece retarding tarnish for a longer period of time.
I use Tarn-X.
Stick with things like toothpaste or silver polish. The above methods are good, but also can be hard on the silver if you keep doing it that way. However you do it the first time is up to you to get the real bad stuff off, after that stick to the safer methods. Get the bags to store your silver in that will prevent tarnish for longer, or a silver service chest that is lined with antitarnish fabric.
Just a tip: most silver you buy is really silverplate, with a very thin coat of silver on top of an alloy. So if the silver comes off with the heavy tarnish, that may be the problem. You also won’t know if your silver still has a great shine until you dry and buff it, including between tines, and in all crevices of decoration. Scratches may not come off with cleaning, but buffing may help a lot. One more thing, some silver patterns have black applied and left in the crevices so the pattern will be emphasized. Best wishes 😇
Use a rouge cloth. These are still sold in hardware stores. When you are done, store this cloth, in a zip bag., so nothing will happen to it. It is also called a jewelers cloth. J.
Yes, with a good silver polish and elbow grease. Don't use the aluminum foil method...I've heard it's rough on silver but I'm not sure why.
