I would research this thoroughly since many pallets are made of wood which is flammable and often treated with chemicals, which may not only increase flammability but may create dangerous fumes when burnt.
There are a lot of treated pallets out there that have cyanide in them. Besides being very flammable, it may not take an awful lot of heat to start the poison leaching out in the air around you. I would keep wood a few feet away from the actual firepit so that the heat and sparks of ash will not start the wood on fire.
Wood and fire do not mix.
