it should already have protection on it. wooden countertops and cabinets are treated before they are put up.
Spar Varnish, the same kind that is used on wood on sailboats and Yachts. If it is already sealed you will need to strip it back to the wood. Thin the first coat, 50-50 with thinner and apply several coats with each thinned with less thinner till the final coat is straight Varnish. Use a good brush, not a cheap one and keep it in thinner between coats
seal it really well. Depending on the color of the wood..if it has a darker stain on it..I would use Helmsman Spar Urethane. It leaves an amber color. But it seals against moisture and it is really protective.
Here is my kitchen counter after a fruitwood and chest nut mixed stain with three coats of helmsman . They are DIY counters. I have had no trouble with water on these counters. And what I like if they start looking like they are being damaged by water..all I have to do is a light sanding and coat with the helmsman. But the Par Urethane is used outdoors, so I feel will last a long time.
Hi Karen, hope this helps you out,,the ideal waterproof protection is a food-safe natural wood oil or hardwax finish that adds no flavors, scents or toxins to your food. Pour a generous amount of linseed oil, mineral oil, tong oil or INTERBUILD Hardwax Wood Oil (natural wood oils) onto a clean, lint-free cotton cloth.
