I have seen some if the DIY show turn bathrooms into WET rooms. The whole floor area and majority of the walls are waterproofed and then tiled... The floor has a central or liner for shower doors. great for someone in a wheel chair, or kids or dogs.
To be sure it is water proof... get professional installation... HomeAdvisor.com or AngiesList.com will help you find a reputable one..
And ...there are agencies that can help with or help you get assistance with funding for handicapped accommodation.
Sorry... that was central or linear drain...no need for shower doors.
Think this may be best handled by a professional as the entire floor area of the shower will have to be properly installed/built
Build a Wall with Marine Ply and Tile it using Waterproof Grout..........
You can modify the area where the tub was by putting in a roll-in shower pan, then add a hand-held shower head that slides on the rod, a single water temperature control, grab bars and a shower bench.
As to maintenance free--- nothing is maintenance free, soap will build up, hair will clog, I can recommend the power brush with a medium handle to make it easier to clean.
While you at it I would make the sink roll-under also.
