  • These sounds can come from many things, All depends upon the type of heater it is that you have. Normally its a fan that is on its way out. And there depending upon the efficiency and age of your system can be one or two fans. One fan is the draft inducer. This fan is small and is found in the area where the flame is and where the exhaust pipe is located. Remove the front cover, it should lift up and out and listen carefully when the heater comes on. This fan will run before the main blower does so it should be easy to determine if that is the cause of the noise. The fan may have a small chrome cover that looks like a BBQ rack. Its there to prevent your fingers from touching it. If that is the noise, then that is the part that needs to be replaced. These fans are not serviceable or able to be oiled. Do not try or you can risk a fire as they get quite hot when they operate as they are venting the flue gasses from the heating flame, The other cause can be the bearings of the main blower motor. or in some cases if you have a belt driven blower it can be the blower itself. Most furnaces produced for homes are direct drive. Some can be oiled some cannot. If you find that there is a lot of dust built up on the motor, then you need to contract a service professional in to remove it and clean it, at which time they can assess the motor to see if it needs to be replaced. In any case, the sound most likely is the furnace fan(s) are starting to fail and I would suggest a professional if your not comfortable checking it out. There is one other thing on a heating system that can cause a funny noise. And that is a humidifier if one is attached. Older units have a small clock type of motor and can make a funny noise if its starting to go.

I believe that is the sound of it screaming "Call for a repairman unless you want to be very cold."
