They should blend in with the room
Depnds on the person.. some like a tranquil monochromatic looks, others prefer contrasting dramatic drapes. do what fits your personality.
It just depends on the look you are going for. I have white walls and chose patterns and colors for the curtains and drapes in each room so that they would stand out as a feature and compliment other furniture in the room. It is all a matter of personal taste and what looks good to you. If you get really stuck, have a consult with a local designer or use free design service at any local store that offers them.
Since my window treatments are do it myself type deals, I do not use patterns as they would be less available to me. I have white curtains in my white sitting room and dining room. Yard sale curtains in my "blue room" (these are blue and white striped) shutters in my living room. In general though I don't think in terms of "should" I do what I like as I don't care really if others "get it" However I have read decorating magazines for many, many years and they really are a great way to educate yourself.
Neutral colours my favorites are grey. Gun metal to silver.
What you Got? IF GOLD Orange yellow, brown tan stone
Usually the drapes and carpet compliment the wall color, either light to dark or dark to light. The furniture is then blended in with neutral or bold colors. Depending on how trendy you are or just go with the flow of what you like, mix and match. Remember your lamps, change the shade colors or styles. Ideas are everywhere, look in furniture stores, magazines, design shops, window shop, scope out a friend‘s home, Go for it, enjoy your new decorating project!
