As long as the water is moving and you clean the filter you should be fine
You don't mention a filter. You really need one for this project.
You need a filter for this project. Rocks do not smell unless covered in algae. To combat that just add a few drops of vinegar once a week to keep it reasonably clean. Completely possible.
Make sure you have a good filter that is easy to clean and take care of when it needs to be cleaned. Something like vinegar or another chemical may be necessary to combat the algae that will present at some point. Keep the tubing you use clean and rinse it with vinegar when you clean it or it will get algae growing in it and it will spread from there. I have had aquariums for over 30 years and the tubing can cause problems in the fountain, the filter and the rocks. The vinegar will help keep both bacteria and the fungus problems to a minimum.
Thanks everyone for the advise! I will make the filter and tubing a priority! - Laura ❤
