Check out Dixie Belle Paint, it was formulated with high quality ingredients while taking out the need for sanding or priming! It is Easy Peasy, and really it is the Best Paint on Planet Earth!
Start by cleaning them very well. Remove the hardware and clean that too. Then sand lightly and paint. You might want to consider new hardware if yours is dated.
You can cover them in contact paper for a quick easy update.
Since I have a Whimsical personality, I covered mine with decorative duct tape. See example photo. I also painted some of them. It took some time but i am happy with my results
If they are wood finish, and in good condition, try Restore-A-Finish (Hardware stores/ home depot about $9.00. Comes in finishes to match any wood finish. Wipe on with clean soft cloth, wipe off with 2nd cloth. Fill ins wear marks and scratches. Then consider new hardware. I did this to mine and a few people thought I had replaced them - and they are at least 40 years old -oak. Hardware is the most expensive part, but not really.
