I’ll be interested to see replies to your question! Why? Because I bought some canvases at a reuse shop; one of which has a very persistant red mark. I always cover my canvases with Gesso before painting a still life or scene, etc. Even though I have done this, one canvas still has a red scribble mark showing through the Gesso. I assume it’s a permanent marker and am hesitant to take the time and trouble of painting a scene and then risk seeing a red scribble mark peek through! I paint in both acrylics and oils. I’ll apply a third (!!) coat of Gesso and if the red marker still shows through, I think I’ll paint with oils as I’m concerned acrylics may still not sufficiently cover the marker.

Personally, I haven’t done a collage over a stained background but I think if you are doing a collage using fairly thick, or dark, papers (or material), you might be lucky. I hope you get a better answer than mine to your question!

Can you spray/paint an acrylic sealer over the marker. It seems that if it is sealed off, it can't bleed????

Like Elaine the poster above I reuse canvas/framed art from resale outlets.

Ive used this thick stain sealer from Lowe's that totally obliterates the painting underneath as well as sharpie signatures on the reverse side.

of course it works on other progects too its a thick pudding texture paint.

Perhaps it comes in smaller containers.

Using a layer of sealant before you mod podge is a good idea. That will prevent bleeding
