The cost of purchasing materials and tools necessary to "waterproof" the inexpensive laminate, plus your time and labour, might be more than the flooring is worth. How long is it going to last before requiring additional time and expense to maintain?
Do price checks and comparisons first with replacing the present laminate with some of better quality.
Laminate flooring is not a water foul proof floor. When cleaning you are only to damp mop, applying sealers of any kind will distort the floor.
Don't use those sealers for shine. When they get wet you see little crumbles and a haze. I applied mine over 4 years ago and still find spots I have to scrape up with a credit card. It looked pretty for about a week.
First off, what are the materials in this laminate? Secondly, "how water-proof or water-resistant do you NEED it to be? Nothing is ever totally waterproof. Parquet wood floors still allow liquids to flow down between the boards. Ceramic tile is only as waterproof as you make the grout. In other words, you must use or apply a "sealing" material to the grout, making sure to follow the instructions for maximum benefit. However, water can and WILL seep under the floor mouldings surrounding ANY floor, if it becomes covered with water enough or if the water spillage is "near" the wall. My best recomendation is to contact the manufacturer and see what they recommend, based on the materials in their product. Good luck!
