I have never heard of anyone covering hydrangeas. I have had them for years and never covered them in Rochester, MN.
Hi Stephine. I also live in WI and don't cover mine. They do just fine even with all of the snow that piles up on top of them. In spring they will look like dead branches but don't cut them. The flowers and growth come off of these.
If they have been established there is no reason to cover them
I'm in SE Wisconsin too, and mine come back every year without covering them.
