Can I overwinter hibiscus or should I replace them in the spring

You don't say where you live, that is very important. Hibiscus are a tropical plant and can't withstand low temps. Unless you are in an area that stays pretty warm in a garage or shed they won't survive. I have five large pots of hibiscus myself and found room in my back room by moving a couple of bookcases around and hung up a light so that they hopefully will make it until it is warm enough next spring. I didn't spend all the effort to double them in size over the summer to have to replace them next year. If you need to you can find the cold hardy hibiscus that you could plant in the ground and they will come back each year.

unkess you are in extreme northern cold, the hibiscus should return next year. Mulch well to protect from frost. Dead leaves or pine needles are free and will do the job

Hi Rcsinj, I had a hibiscus at my old house. Planted in the ground and survived Chicago winters. I think it all depends on weather resilience. But since they are in pots, I recommend moving them into your outdoor storage and covering them as best as you can. That can help with frost.

Do you know your zone? In zones 8 and 9, even if it freezes, hibiscus in pots will come back. Those planted in ground live for many years.
