Take the lid off of the toilet, look inside, there is a chain. The chain may be under the black stopper at the bottom, release the chain, the stopper will close and the tank will fill properly. Once the water level is reached the floater bulb will float and the water will shut off. Also the chain may have to be shortened, if it appears too long. Adjust by removing the chain from the arm where it is attached. Be patient, as this takes practice to achieve the right chain length. Good luck.
The Long Black Fill Valve is damaged it is time for a new one. Turn off the water take it off replace it and you should be good to go.
or replace the rubber stopper in bottom of tank.
Sounds like you have a leakY stopper. Replace the rubber stopper at the bottom of the tank that lifts up when you press the flush lever. Make sure you know the brand of toilet when you go to the plumbing section of Home Depot or Lowe’s. turn the water valve off. Flush the toilet. Wipe out any remaining water in the tank. Replace the rubber stopper. Turn the water valve back on and toilet will refill. Good luck!
Sometimes it's just a buildup of minerals or rust that slightly prevent the flap from closing if it's still in good shape. Keep the ball float up to stop waterflow and clean any reside under the flap around the drain hole. Be sure flap falls back in the right place, let the float back down, wait for fill to stop, flush and observe. Might save ya from holiday extra hassle. Good Luck
It sounds like you have a leaking flap in the bottom of the tank. You should be able to buy a new flap to replace the old one and this should resolve your problem. Take the old one off and go to the hardware store with it to compare it to what you need to purchase.
