What should I replace the wicker with?

These storage cubes have wicker paneling all around them. I want to remove the wicker and replace with either mirrors or maybe tile. I'm using the cubes as end tables in my living room I'm also going to paint them black to match the coffee table.
Since you will not know what is under the wicker ,I would just paint the entire unit instead of removing it

Since the wicker has texture you could paint it a different color and then rub it with black to give it depth. Maybe a metallic like gold or silver?
You might consider Smart Tiles. They are thin and can be cut to size with scissors and stuck right on top of the wicker. Home Depot carries them, as well as several online sites.
I wouldn't replace the wicker. It looks nice and adds dimension.
