It depends if the chimney is in working order. Call a chimneysweep to do an inspection, safety check and good cleaning. I have a woodburning fireplace with a gas "key" to start the fire but I have never ever used it. I can start a great fire without it.
I would suggest for your own safety that you have a professional advise you on this change. Wood can burn extremely hot so you need to be sure of what you are planning to do.
You would need to find out if you have the right sort of flue and chimney to take away the harmful smoke..........
Do not mix fire and gas.
