Spring and fall
wait until all frosts have past, and the soil is warmed a bit this way it will not be such a shock for the shrub
Keep in mind that there are two things you can do to help with any transplanting, no matter what the size of the plant. Some plants may be too large to cover (see below).
1) Add B-1 solution to help roots adapt to shock. (Find B-1 in any garden shop; follow directions---be sure and soak roots well BEFORE transplanting and add the solution to transplant hole, too.)
2) If the size of the plant doesn't prohibit this: Cover your plant for three days. Use light cloth, leave room for air flow. This will help plant focus on roots and not expend energy on photosynthesis ("Photosynthesis is the process used by plants, algae and certain bacteria to harness energy from sunlight into chemical energy.").
early spring
Hello, Transplanting a butterfly bush is usually accomplished in either spring or fall. Transplant prior to new growth in spring or once its foliage has died down in the fall. Hope this helps you out.
