When we were in Massachusetts my dad did the following. Once he knew they were dormant, he would cut them down to about eight inches tall making sure the cuts were above a node and cut at an angle. He would then put a wire cage or fencing around each rose allowing about six inches of space between the fencing and rose canes. Then he would fill the space with leaves from the yard. Not hard packed but firm. Once the threat of frost in the spring was over, he would remove them. Good luck.
