Tennis balls in the dryer. At least 2. Should help

Skip the fabric softener! All those chemials dry on the fabrics and make them less absorbent and even crunchy in some cases. Use a low suds detergent, use vinegar in the fabric softener cup and felted wool dryer balls in the dryer. May take a few washings to rid the towels of the residual residue, but they will be soft warm and fluffy.
If you hang them on a clothesline, they will be stiff even if you use fabric softener in the wash.
I have started using my own version of fabric softener, made using 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup hair conditioner ( a cheap one is ok) and mix with 6 cups warm water. You only use about 2 tablespoons per regular load. I throw in a dry towel and I use dryer plastic balls that have little nubs on them. My clothes and towels come out great and unwrinkled and fluffy...Hope this helps!
