Use spackle, let it dry for 2 days, then sand with a sand block, paint.
I too use spackle to fill those holes. Fill it once, let dry, sand, repeat if needed. Wipe of excess with a damp cloth, prime, then paint. Best of luck.
I use spackle but but I don't sand. Once the hole is filled I take a wet flat sponge and wipe off the excess outside of the hole. Just one swipe. It is clean and will dry with very little sanding left to do and ready to paint.
Use spackle on the small holes and drywall patch with spackle on the larger ones. Let dry. Sand lightly. Paint
Spackle and a putty knife will do the trick. Be sure to prime before you paint.
