    I would use roll insulation tucked up in the rafters above the ceiling.

    No. Drop ceilings are usually installed to cover pipes ductwork and utilities in a ceiling. The panels prevent air migration from the room to the ceiling.

    I agree with William. They are usually there to cover up pipes and ductwork. They may not be strong enough to hold any insulation anyway as they are hanging on wires.
