Hi Heather, I don't think the base makes as much difference as the top coat. However, most projects I've read where the dishwasher Mod Podge was used, people say they would hand wash them anyway. Heather, I actually saw a video and the person used regular mod podge and outdoor mod podge among other things to test which looked best. It turned out that the regular mod podge kept the colors the truest. It's a pretty long video but it might give you some insight.
