I would like to plant two small perennial flowering bushes each side of the bottom step of my sundeck stairs. I don't want them to overgrow on the step. Live in the north east. Appreciate any suggestions.

Mums, do not plant them too close to the steps, or to each other. Be sure, they are perennials, have a lovely day. J.

Unless you plant any bush the distance from the step of the mature bush, it will always overlap.

Most important factor is your zone, or the climate that the shrub will thrive in. There are many new dwarf shrubs on the market that stay small and require very little pruning. Also, condider the light and water requirements. Some of the new, smaller shrubs include hydrangea, ninebarks, miniature confirs (these stay green year around). Check with your local nursery to see what is hardy in your area, the mature size of the shrub and the color of he leaves and blossoms. There are many to choose from. Good luck!

always look at uh uw (ultimate height and width. There is nothing worse that shearing plants that are meant to flower in a cascade or free form into a ball or square. So many to choose from. I like abelia and caryopteris. There are several forms and colors for each of these and they are feathery. A feng shui person once told me never to plant thorny things like roses or pyracantha at the front door since it isn't very welcoming.
