First decide if you want white lights or colored. I've also see specialty lights. Take a walk down the holiday aisles at a local store for some inspiration!

what style of decor do you have for your house? Keep to the same style for your tree.
What do you have to work with? I put the the lights on first then the ornaments. I stand back to make sure the ornaments are evenly spaced.
