Would it devalue my fireplace to paint it out in white? It is currently gray brick.
We have built-ins on either side of our gray brick fireplace, and I would love to paint the fireplace out in white. However, my husband feels it would be a bad idea.

Clean it off really well using soap and water and a stiff brush... TSP will work well too... the objective is to get off any smoke or oily residue from burning wood etc..and have a clean surface to start with.. so the brick absorbs the paint or whitewash more evenly.
White wash: 1 part paint, 3 parts water. brush on, wipe down, repeat until it looks the way you want... at least 2 coats sealer (matte, satin, or eggshell)
